Sarva Pitra Amavasya is considered to be the most important in Pitrapachh. According to the mythology of Sarva Pitra Amavasya, the father Agnishwat, and Akshoda, the maiden daughter of Barhishapada, were doing great penance. She was so absorbed in penance that a thousand years of gods passed. With the intensity of his penance, the Pitra Lok also began to shine and all the great Pitragans gathered to give blessings to Akshoda.
He said to Akshoda, “Hey daughter, we are all very pleased with your penance. So ask for whatever you want”, but Akshoda did not pay attention to the ancestors. On the other hand, she kept looking at the most glorious Pitra Amavas without blinking. When the Pitra repeatedly asked, he said, “Oh God, do you really want to bless me?” On this, the glorious Pitra Amavasu said, hey Akshoda, ask for blessings. Akshoda said that if you want to give me a boon then I want to be happy with you right now.
Hearing this, all the Pitras became angry and cursed Akshoda that she would fall from the pitras world and go to the earth. After which Akshoda started apologizing to the Pitras. The Pitras took pity on this and said that you will be born on earth as a fish girl. There the sage Parashar will accept you as his wife and Vyas will be born from your womb. After which you will return to the Pitra Lok.
On rejecting this act of iniquity of Akshoda, all the fathers blessed Amavas saying that “Hey Amavasu today this date will be known by your name, whoever cannot do shrad throughout the year and if then he will get the full fruit of all the dates.”
